Description

This route is a variation on the famous Suvretta Loop that bypasses the Munt section from San Murezzan and Lake Suvretta, which has been closed for several years now due to the risk of landslides and will likely never reopen for safety reasons. In terms of distance, this alternative is practically equivalent to the classic Suvretta Loop, while the total elevation gain has increased slightly; the technical difficulty has also increased slightly due to the section between Laj da Pesch and the Suvretta Pass, which features a very rugged and steep trail.

What has changed is the physical effort required: to reach the 2,873-meter elevation of Fuorcla Schlattain, you must tackle a steep climb—technically straightforward but featuring long stretches with significant gradients. The route starts at a rest area with free parking; behind it lies the bike path, which you’ll follow toward Samaden and then Celerina. Once you reach the area near the station, you begin the ascent, initially following Via Lavinias, which then turns into a forest road; the road climbs at a steady gradient all the way to Marguns.

Once past Marguns, continue WEST along a wide, vehicle-accessible trail to Gluna (in practice, continue straight ahead instead of turning left toward Corviglia as in the classic route). Continue along a wide, vehicle-accessible trail (used as a service road for the ski lifts) with steep gradients up to Laj Alv (2,500 meters), then proceed to Fuorcla Schlattain—still with steep gradients that will require most riders to push their bikes.

Once past the pass, you begin descending on a beautiful trail that winds in wide curves to Laj da la Pesch, before tackling the most technically challenging section, which ends just above Lake Suvretta, where you rejoin the classic route. You then continue descending northward along the Ova da Suretta stream, where fast sections alternate with more challenging ones, until reaching Alp Suvretta, where an extremely easy forest road begins and ends in Bever. From there, crossing through the village, you’ll quickly return to the starting point.
