Description

The route starts in Marina di Campo and begins to climb toward the Monte Tambone area.

The climb takes place mainly on an easy dirt road and allows you to gain elevation without any particular technical difficulties.

It’s a fairly steady climb, so it’s best not to push the pace too hard: during the ride, you’ll have to return several times to the island’s central highlands, and by the end, the total elevation gain will reach about 1,900 meters.

Before reaching the highest point, you’ll arrive at the start of the first descent.

Cornicione

The Cornicione offers your first taste of Elba’s terrain.

The descent starts in the Monte Tambone area and begins on a fast, fun trail, with a nice mix of more technical sections and stretches where you can let the bike run free.

The first part is the most distinctly downhill.

Afterward, the trail changes character and becomes a long traverse along the hillside, with several sections where you can pick up speed and a few interesting passages that require you to work the pedals as well.

So it’s not a pure downhill run from start to finish: it alternates between descents, flow sections, and pedaling stretches.

All of this takes place with the sea constantly in the background—a feature that makes this trail very different from classic Alpine descents.

Laconella DH

Once you’ve finished the Cornicione, you climb back up toward Monte Tambone to reach the second major descent of the day: Laconella DH.

Here, the difficulty level rises.

Laconella is a fast, physically demanding, and decidedly technical descent, featuring rock, a rock garden, and sections where you have to choose your line carefully.

It’s one of the descents that best represents the enduro character of central Elba.

Speeds can get high, and the terrain often tempts you to let the bike run free, but that’s exactly why you must always maintain a safe margin: some sections come up quickly and require decisive action.

During the previous climb toward Tambone, you also pass near the junction used in the middle section of this descent, giving you a head start on understanding how the various trails in the area interconnect.

Capo Stella

After two decidedly Enduro-style descents, the terrain changes completely.

You head toward the Capo Stella peninsula to tackle what represents the “+1” of the ride.

It wasn’t included for its technical difficulty, but for the setting.

The trail follows the coastline through scenic terrain, with the sea on both sides of the peninsula and continuous views of Elba’s bays.

It’s a more relaxed and easy-going section that also allows you to recover a bit before the second half of the day.

From a riding standpoint, it’s not the most challenging section of the tour, but in terms of scenery, it’s probably one of the most memorable.

Serra del Pero

After leaving Capo Stella, you head back inland and climb back up until you rejoin the GTE route.

From here, the descent down Serra del Pero toward Lacona begins.

It’s another trail with a distinctly enduro character, about 2 km long with over 200 meters of descent.

The descent alternates between faster, more controlled sections and progressively rougher and more technical sections.

It’s a trail where you have to actively ride the bike, but it also allows you to find a good rhythm when you manage to link the lines well.

Once again, Elba’s characteristic terrain and the view of the coast greatly enhance the experience.

Once you’ve finished Serra del Pero, get ready for the day’s final major climb.

Back toward Monte Tambone

You’ll gain elevation once more as you head toward Monte Tambone.

By this point, you’ve already covered quite a few kilometers, tackled several descents, and covered a good portion of the day’s approximately 1,900 meters of elevation gain.

It’s precisely this pattern that makes the route challenging: there isn’t a single long climb followed by a long descent, but rather a continuous succession of climbs and trails.

You therefore need to reach the final climb while still conserving energy and maintaining focus.

Because what lies ahead is also the toughest descent of the original route.

Elba 500

The final descent is the Elba 500.

At the time this route was ridden, it was probably the most challenging trail of the day.

Its character is completely different from the more “flowing” trails encountered earlier.

It alternates between very rough sections, deep ruts, rocky sections, and technical passages, on rock that offers truly remarkable grip in dry conditions.

It’s a physically demanding descent where you have to keep working your arms and legs, and where the fatigue built up throughout the day can make a big difference.

The trail gradually descends toward Marina di Campo, allowing you to complete the loop directly.

WARNING: Current conditions on the Elba 500

The conditions on the Elba 500 have changed since this route was created.

Reports from 2025 and 2026 indicate several maintenance issues, including severe erosion and, above all, highly invasive vegetation in certain sections.

As of August 2026, a central section is still reported to be heavily overgrown.

Before setting out, it is therefore strongly recommended that you check the trail’s current conditions.

If the Elba 500 has not been recently cleared, it is advisable to replace it with one of the many other descents available in the area rather than following it simply because it is included in the original GPX file.

In summary

This is one of the routes to take if you want to experience much of the enduro character of central Elba in a single day.

The Cornicione kicks things off with a fast descent that gradually turns into a pedaled traverse.

Laconella DH definitely raises the bar with a more physical, fast, and technical ride.

The Capo Stella traverse, on the other hand, represents the “+1”: less focused on pure downhill riding, but included for its stunning views of the sea.

Serra del Pero brings the ride back to Enduro terrain before the final climb to Tambone.

Finally, Elba 500—at least in its original form—offered the most challenging finale: rough terrain, gullies, rock, and plenty of physically demanding riding all the way to Marina di Campo.

With about 50 km and 1,900 m of elevation gain, however, the physical demands should not be underestimated.

It’s not just a collection of descents: you have to earn every one of them.
