Bättelmatthorn

Alpine route on a very scenic peak.

It begins in Ossasco in the Bedretto Valley, from where you climb to the Nufenen Pass either on foot or by post bus. From the pass, descend to the first right turn and then take the road to Lake Gries. Passing the windmills, turn left along the lake until you reach the Gries Pass, from where you pedal and continue mostly to the junction of the trail to the Busto City Shelter. If you want to avoid the hike to the top, continue straight, otherwise climb to the top. At a certain point, the slope becomes very steep and rocky, so it is better to leave the bike and walk the last 100 meters of elevation to the summit. The views are fantastic, but remember to bring good mountain hiking shoes because it is very exposed.

Back to the bike, surf over (small) scree until you come back to the turnoff to the refuge. Here a few meters secured with a chain await you, but this is not a big deal if you are used to riding in the mountains. After the landslides, the path becomes passable again. You almost reach the hut and turn left to cross the path that leads into the valley to Bättelmatt. Beautiful and not difficult.

More difficult, but not too difficult, is the path from Bättelmatt to Morasco lake, with some trialistic passages. Lunch break in Riale and ascent on the gravel road to the San Giacomo pass, where you take the path back to Ossasco, with some ascents and descents that are not always rideable.
