Bernina Express da Livigno
The Bernina Express is a great Valposchiavo classic, and it gets even better if you start from Livigno. In fact, you follow the bike path to Forcola di Livigno, with the last killer ramp leading right up to the pass.
From the pass starts the beautiful connection to the Bernina Pass. This is a trail specially created for bikes, with challenging uphill sections but all rideable if you have some leg. You pass over the entrance to Val Minor, to be done one more time following this trail, and continue with Bernina looking down on us.
You then descend, still on trail, to the Bernina hospice where you skirt Lake Bianco until you reach the dam.
From here we continue on a falsopiano on a dirt road where there are many pedestrians, to arrive first at the Belvedere and then at Alp Grüm, where the view towards the Palü and its glacier (or what remains of it) is fantastic.
By the way, at Alp Grüm you can also stay overnight, and it is quite a unique experience with the sound of waterfalls in the distance.
From here the actual trail descent begins, with continuous track crossings. Initially very smooth, as you descend it becomes a bit more challenging and especially full of boulders driven into the ground. Your hands will ask for some breaks if you are not used to alpine long descents.
It is over 1,000 meters of elevation gain to get to Poschiavo, but luckily a nice little red train awaits to take you back to the top. This, too, is a unique experience, with cogwheel sections and lots of fantastic views for you to enjoy in total relaxation. As of today (July 11, 2023), the ticket with bike costs 24 chf.
You must get off at the Ospizio Bernina station. From here you return to Livigno by following this trail.
