Fortezza di Monte Alfonso

Departure as always from Gallicano towards Castelnuovo di Garfagnana via Monteperpoli. After passing the Bonini Restaurant (we are at 496 meters of altitude: GPM of the day) after about 1 km downhill we turn left towards Monterotondo, a small hamlet of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. When we reach the village we continue on the dirt road that runs alongside the Church, pass a private house and continue the descent for about 6/700 meters. At a sign that says "private property - dead-end road," on the left begins the path that leads, in about 700 meters, to Torrite località Palazzetto.

From here we go to the Fortress of Monte Alfonso following, when possible, the Ariosto trail. After a nice panoramic tour of the walls we return to the main road and turn left towards Cerretoli. After about 1 kilometer, at Buggina, we take the dirt road we find on our right that in about 2 kilometers takes us to Antisciana. We go down on the main Garfagnana road and turn left toward Poggio for about 2 kilometers and then turn right toward Lake Pontecosi. Skirting the lake we go to Castelnuovo and return, after eating polenta and mushrooms at Aia di Piero, to Gallicano for the Fondovalle.
