The route is characterized by a mostly dirt surface, little elevation gain, and proximity to water canals. The history of Ivrea's canals fed by tributaries of the Dora Baltea is one of canals and elevators that began in 1433 on commission by the Savoy family. The canals were first used as communication routes, then for the irrigation of lands placed on different levels. The hydraulic elevator of the irrigation consortium of Cigliano, Borgo d'Ale, Villareggia, and Moncrivello, which is the cross- way of four waterways, in order of elevation the old Ivrea Canal (devised in the time of Leo- nardo da Vinci), La Dora Baltea, the Cigliano Canal (1783), and the Rotto Canal (1440). A synoptic picture tells the story of the consortium and the elevator between 1776 and 1881 on the initiative of founder Don Evasio Ferraris. Last we admire from the top of the wide path the impressive Villareggia irrigation system. As an interlude there is the Sanctuary Madonna dei Frati.
