Monte Suello
A bike tour that takes us along the shoreline of the middle and upper reaches of Lake Idro. We start from Anfo at the sailing club and ride 4 km along the beautiful new bike path, then take a sharp left, making a strenuous climb back to the state road, which we’ll follow to the S. Antonio roundabout. We leave Provincial Road 237 and head uphill toward Bagolino. After a short stretch, we pass through a site sacred to the unification of Italy: the Monte Suello memorial, dedicated to an army of volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, who, even while wounded, led them to the decisive victory that brought southern Trentino and Veneto into the Kingdom of Italy.
Once back in Bagolino at the Romantera bridge, we leave Provincial Road 669 by turning left. For 3 km, we follow this beautiful forest road before turning sharply left onto a steep trail with at least 150 meters of elevation gain; the trail remains stunning: it becomes undulating, and for long stretches we ride in the saddle up to the highest point, where it meets the ridge trail coming from Cima Breda. From this vantage point, the views of Lake Idro are breathtaking.
The incredibly fun descent begins—at times technical but always rideable—offering great enjoyment all the way down to where it crosses the provincial road to Bagolino. We cross the highway, and where the guardrail opens up, a beautiful and fun trail begins, leading us further on to the famous Sentiero dei Morti. After a major overhaul, calling it a “trail” is an understatement.
We ride the entire length of it with great enjoyment all the way to the Ponte Caffaro cemetery, take advantage of the convenient and safe underpass, and proceed parallel to the provincial road for a short stretch until we reach the late medieval church of San Giacomo. From here, we’re soon on the lakeshore and on the beautiful scenic bike path, which we follow for 7 km to Anfo, where we had parked the car.
