Tomülpass
The Tomül Pass is one of the Bünder evergreens. It is rather demanding in terms of fitness and technique - but offers a fantastic panorama of the Safien and Vals valleys.
The best place to start the tour is Ilanz - the lowest point of the tour at 698 meters above sea level. From the train station in Ilanz, take the overland road to Castrisch, Valendas, Carrera and Versam at 901 meters above sea level. From Versam, the next 21.6 km lead through the Safiental valley along the road via Egschi, Neukirch, Safien Platz to Talkirch. After 1.5 km you finally reach Turrahus at 1694 meters above sea level. The road through the Safiental is mostly a well-maintained dirt road. Despite the pleasant gradient, you gain about 700 meters in altitude.
From Turrahus, a sometimes very steep, strenuous road leads over the Falätscha Alp to the Tomül Pass at 2412 meters above sea level. Only cyclists in good physical condition and with good technique can make it to the pass without descending.
After a break on the Tomül Pass, a technical, rough trail leads down to Alp Tomül at 2179m. After the bridge at Alp Tomül, you ride along the left side of the Riedboden. The downhill to Vals leaves nothing to be desired: Technical as well as flowing sections accompanied by a great panorama. If you still have enough tail end at 1690m and love technical trails, you can take the "Vals shortcut" trail. Alternatively, you can let the downhill roll out on the natural road to Vals.
From Vals, take the overland road along the Vals Rhine through the Vals Valley via St. Martin, Uors to Ilanz, where the loop ends again.
