GTE Grande Traversata Elbana per MTB: giorno 2
Fantastic itinerary crossing the island from east to west to be done in two days(first day here). Spring is recommended for the blossoms and scents and fall. Avoid summer as it is too hot. Suggested ebike. The itinerary is derived from the classic CAI Club Alpino Italiano itinerary with modification in some sections to make it more cyclable.
Day two from Marina di Campo: after a super breakfast (including a bag with take-out lunch) atHotel La Barcarola (biker-friendly), we return to the
GTE trail climbing above the Gulf of Procchio to Poggio where we take a coffee break at the typical bar in the square. We continue with the ever-blue horizon of sea and sky to the Church of Madonna del Monte with the magnificent Napoleonic fountain. From here to Pomonte the scent of flowers and cistus will always accompany you. This is the most spectacular stretch where the essence of the island and the Mediterranean will enter you. Here I will stop, telling you only that the sensations you will experience will be unforgettable.
You go along a good mule track that served the access to the Lighthouse of Campo alle Serre Semaphore, abandoned since 1953, which was in use by the Navy. From here begins another mythical descent, the "Semaforo," always challenging but never extreme, which will take you directly to Pomonte. This is followed by the return by asphalt to Portoferraio for the ferry.
