Santo Stefano di Sessanio - Rocca Calascio

Pleasant excursion departing from Castel del Monte to discover the villages Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio. The itinerary runs mainly on dirt roads that are always rideable, on paved sections with zero traffic and on trails. The start is from Castel del Monte where we initially climb until we intercept a dirt road that is not easy to identify. After arriving "at altitude" we find a very easy dirt road.

Follow the track to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, which is certainly worth a visit on foot with a push bike so as not to interfere with the many tourists. We go up again very quietly to Rocca Calascio, with the fortress on the top of the hill. Also of interest is the beautiful Church of Santa Maria della Pietà. Also here pay attention to tourists who, especially on holidays, are quite numerous and it is necessary to push the bike through the narrow alleys of the village. Leaving the village take the nice (technical) path that cuts the paved road that cars make to go up. If you don't feel like doing the path take the asphalt.

We get to Calascio and then at a spring near the fork in the road on asphalt we start to descend on nice trail to the Laghetto di Calascio. Follow the trail until we take the dirt road on the left that leads to Colle della Battaglia (archaeological site). We come out, after a wide loop, on the paved road that takes us back to Castel del Monte, closing the tour.

Itinerary that presents no particular difficulty. There are only 3 sections of path a bit "technical" but nothing much for those with minimal mtb experience. I recommend paying attention to tourists in Santo Stefano di Sessanio and Rocca Calascio, then throughout the tour you will not see a soul.
