Stelvio - Bernina e ritorno in 3 giorni
Day 1
We set off from Prato allo Stelvio using the Bike Shuttle (booked through the Sudtirolbike website) that took us to the top of the Stelvio Pass where on the right we take the path with some nice uphill ramps to the Garibaldi Hut where on the left starts a path of an old military road that will take us downhill through its close hairpin bends to the Umbrail Pass. We turn left onto the asphalt road and after a short stretch we enter the path on the right that will take us to Bocchetta di Forcola. The route is almost all pedalable except for a few passages in the last meters to get to Bocchetta di Forcola where you need to push.
Once at the top we take a path on the left that skirts the wall and arrive at the beginning of the descent that takes us with hairpin bends and a few cuts to Malga Pedenolo. From there the descent continues on hairpin bends that are relatively exposed but if done carefully do not present any particular technical difficulties.
Once on the forest road we follow it to the Cancano lakes dam and continue to the Torri di Fraele and then insert ourselves on the right after a couple of hairpin bends on the Decauville.
We follow it to Arnoga and then take the signs to Val Viola and then to Rifugio Viola where we have booked for the night.
Day 2
Awakened early we prepare for the second leg of the tour: starting from the hut we climb to reach the Val Viola Pass to enter Switzerland where the downhill trail with some technical sections will take us to Alpe Campo. After a small stretch of forest road and past the Saoseo hut we will turn left onto a path that with technical sections will take us to Angeli Custodi, a hamlet before Poschiavo. We will continue on back roads to Poschiavo station to catch the Bernina red train.
The ride on the little train is always spectacular and we will get off at the Bernina Hospice. Having taken a few photos we start uphill again with a few pushing sections to enter the path that through breathtaking views and some exposed sections will take us to the Forcola pass, where we will take the bike path that will take us to the Mottolino gondola. Unfortunately a mandatory stop because the weather was getting worse and it was starting to rain persistently. Taking the gondola over simple forestry and under a small downpour we arrived at the second stop of the tour, a hotel in Trepalle.
Day 3
We wake up bright and early and the weather returns to smile on us with a beautiful sunny day. We get ready and set off on the last leg of the tour that will take us back to Prato allo Stelvio. We depart from the hotel and enter the trail that uphill and with pushing sections will svallicare the Trela Pass. From there it's all downhill first on trail then on forest road to Lake San Giacomo, which we bypass and get on the trail to go all the way through Val Mora to Santa Maria Val Mustair. There are alternating uphill and easy downhill sections and some more technical cuts.
Once in Santa Maria we continue on the bike path slightly downhill to Glorenza where the Val Venosta bike path takes us back to Prato allo Stelvio.
