Rifugio Rosetta

The Rosetta refuge, built by SAT at 2581 m on the western edge of the Pale plateau just above the village of San Martino di Castrozza, is surely one of the most striking areas of the Pale. The high peaks, silhouetted against the sky like sharp teeth and tinged red at sunset like corals, frame the refuge, the only silent sentinel on this vast, lunar-looking rocky plateau. Wandering the plateau with a specific destination or even without one is definitely a special experience. It is like walking on a blackboard where millennia of history are engraved, where cold, frost, wind, snow and sun have left traces of their passage, shaping the rocks, digging deep fissures, softening the shapes. During summer the color of the rocks always looks different, cloud flakes reflect on the rock surface like embroidery, and the sun at dawn tints everything a soft pink. During the winter the wind and snow draw different surfaces every day, covering every roughness and turning the plateau into an expanse of shimmering flakes. It could take pages and pages to describe the variety of this environment, but the best way to get to know it is to experience it, is to climb up here and savor the silence, is to ascend the peaks at sunset and be amazed by the beauty of nature, is to walk to clear the mind, is to climb to feel alive, is to chat quietly over a glass of wine to understand the value of simple things.
