San Gemignano Monteriggioni
The outward leg of the route runs along the Via Francigena that connected the 2 beautiful medieval villages. It is one of the most beautiful stages along the famous route of the pilgrims on their way to Rome. You pass through the characteristic Tuscan hills where in addition to forests, vineyards and olive groves you will also encounter some ancient and hospitable villages such as Torraccia di Chiusi, Castel Pietraia and Abbadia a Isola. Really spectacular is then the entrance from the north to the ancient castle of Monteriggioni.
The return is partly on asphalt to Colle Val d'Elsa and then a stretch of bicycle path to Poggibonsi and then cut back to internal dirt road. Finally we climb back up to San Gimignano always on a dirt road along the old road to Poggibonsi. The route is easy and has no particular technical difficulties; it is very scenic and rewarding.
