Percorso di cresta Cuar Duron
Start from Terzo di Tolmezzo and take the usual climb toward Marcelie, passing through Zuglio and Sezza. Just before the pass, take the forest trail on the right that leads to Fielis; when the trail begins to descend slightly, leave it and take the tractor road on the left, following it all the way to Forcella Navantes (the surface is often in poor condition, with some sections requiring a push). From here, take the trail that climbs to Monte Cuar through a beautiful conifer forest (push-walk with short rideable sections).
Once you reach the summit, a beautiful descent begins along a grassy ridge (initial section S2, very steep—be careful if the ground is wet—then S1). Upon reaching the saddle between Cuar and Duron, there is a short push-up to the summit of the latter, followed by another beautiful descent to Sella Duron. From here, take the trail on the left that descends through a beech forest (difficulty S2+, a bed of dry leaves covering loose rocks) until you reach Cazzaso Nuovo. From here, the trail (I was in a hurry) climbs briefly up to the Marcelie meadows to connect with the well-known trails that descend to Terzo, always beautiful and very well maintained by the locals; however, the route I recommend—and which makes this trip truly very interesting—would involve ascending the forest road/mule track that you encounter immediately to the right as you proceed toward Fusea, which leads to the paved road just before the junction for Buttea Fornas, where you take the trail to the left that reaches Cuel Major.
From the summit, descend along the other slope toward Curiedi and, once you reach the paved road, immediately leave it (to the right) to climb mostly along the base of Monte Dobis; descend again from the north slope via a beautiful trail to Fusea, and from there take the lovely route leading to the Pieve di S. Maria through Cjarandes and Somp lis Voris. This route is perhaps one of the most beautiful MTB trails in the But Valley.
Note: The Cuar Dobis ridge, clearly visible when approaching Tolmezzo from the highway, is still "yellow"; when it turns "green," the grass will be taller and the route less pleasant.
