Crinale00, Via Giulia, La Montagna e Germagnano
A classic ridge tour, during which there is virtually no descent to the valley floor.
The initial ascent leads over 900 meters, on the ridge 00 of Sentiero Italia, passing first near Monte Falcone then at the Catenaccio summit, which is followed by a short, fast descent on dirt road. There are no particular difficulties, except for a few points where the gradients are rather steep and the surface uneven; for the rest it is easy dirt or off-road. With the next climb (a little more than a kilometer) we reach the farmhouse La Casciara after which we find the junction for a long off-road section full of ups and downs and very scenic; in rainy periods it is a section with often very muddy ground, channels caused by the passage of motor vehicles or the trampling of grazing animals. The gates that are closed MUST BE CLOSED after passing through (thank you!).
It's about ten kilometers that come out on the SS di Bocca Trabaria: it follows downhill asphalt, four kilometers to the fork where you take Via Giulia, an ancient link road along which you encounter several disused buildings dating back centuries, really quite fascinating. Here, too, it's all ups and downs, never climbs worthy of the name but beautiful views, especially the one from Vesina (about km 42) that leaves open views of the valley and the town of Anghiari. From here the road becomes a real path, more technical and always very rough, very enjoyable, until it descends to the Fosso di Pischiano. This is easily ridden and climbs to the nucleus of Pischiano, with a steep and challenging paved climb. This is followed by a descent on easy dirt road to the village of La Montagna, where you keep left onto the paved road leading downhill. Just 1 km and you turn right, signposted for Germagnano and climb, this time a real one, of about 6-7 km, the first two very challenging then easier, up to the top of Monte Vicchi, elevation 950 m. Another 6 km of downhill asphalt (narrow and sloping road, watch out for TRAFFIC in the opposite direction!) and you arrive in San Sepolcro and then return to Città di Castello.
The proposed track follows State Road 3bis but if you wish you can avoid it almost entirely by using alternative variants and then, from San Giustino onward, the bike/pedestrian path along the Tiber River.
