M. Caucaso salita diretta
"Cyclo-mountaineering" version of M. Caucaso that offers a more direct and very impressive climb.
Departure from Ferrada: on asphalt you climb to Moconesi and at the sports field you take the ascent that soon becomes a dirt road with Caucaso signs. With steady and never too challenging ascent you arrive at a widening with some benches and slate tables,
400 meters further on, our path starts on the left, forcing you to continue by bike to the summit. Those who wish to ascend by pedaling on a longer path through the woods can opt for the climb described here. The ridge up instead climbs straight up among the Mediterranean scrub with extremely scenic route, some times it is barely visible but easily intuitable.
A section dealing with a fun rock prominence on leaning slab, then always on the ridge you arrive on beautiful hanging plateau in view of the summit hut. On reaching the summit, descend west side to a col from which you overlook the very steep south face.
Climb the last rise along the ridge trail from there begins the beautiful descent to Passo Pietra Cavallina. From the Pass you turn left and with beautiful descent never too difficult but always to be guided ai arrives at Passo Croci from which you must descend to the dirt road faced on the ascent There are two solutions:
- Descend east side on technical trail, sometimes a bit dirty but fun.
- Continue on the scenic ridge on easy path until the chapel of S.Rocco.
In both cases, having reached the dirt road, go up to the slate benches from which the descent known as "delle panchine" begins, truly exciting, certainly one of the longest and most interesting in Val Fontanabuona and beyond with even challenging sections. The attack is both from the benches and a little further on a path marked red triangle that we will not give up until the end, in any case just below they rejoin to continue with interspersed a few sections to pedal until you reach a quarry road that you follow briefly until a bend to then resume the path that will go to traverse the dirt road again, then again a short section on the road that we leave at the end of the straight section to go to take the most beautiful and challenging section of the trail that is always on firm terrain and fixed rock.
Now it offers some challenging switchbacks and rather rocky sections until we get to the Cornia houses that we cross (with due caution ) through the alleys to end up on stairs and cross the road and take a paved descent Now the last section is flowing but very fun and bowls us directly onto the Val Fontanabuona state highway with a toothy smile! All that's left is to pedal all the way back to the starting point!
