Capanna Tassoni - Lago Scaffaiolo – Rifugio Segavecchia – Lago Scaffaiolo – I Tagli
Departure from Capanna Tassoni. From the hut, continue up the roadway to Croce Arcana on the Tuscan-Emilian ridge and take the scenic E1 ridge trail to the left, which you follow to Lake Scaffaiolo. You skirt the lake and continue along the E1 trail. From Passo dei Due Santi, the trail climbs ruggedly very hollowed out and graded, so it becomes more viable, with the ebike, to climb off the trail and pick it up again when the ridge descent begins.
Keeping the E1 trail downhill, you meet trail 121, which leads downhill and with rugged and technical relaunches, also to be done by hand bike, to the Cancellino pass, in the direction of Corno alle Scale. Upon reaching the pass, continue on trail 121 with a technical and difficult descent over a rocky sassaia and a few stepped spots to be done by hand bike. The trail becomes exposed for a ridge section with very steep slopes on either side.
When you reach the slopes of Mount Gennaro, near a post with trail marker arrows, turn sharply left to face the beautiful long descent that leads to the Segavecchia refuge. The descent unravels on singletrack in the midst of blueberries to deviate to the coast on the right with a few technical passages and continues always turning on the mountainside. Past a section with boulders and roots the descent becomes more flowing and fast, fun. Still on Cai 121 near a crossroads you keep left continuing the fast descent. When you come to a small stream you turn right and after a short stretch you resume the downhill slope.
Suddenly the descent becomes more technical with boulders, roots and steep and narrow hairpin bends and so continues on the coast until you reach the hut. Having passed it you have to face left, past the access bar, the long and hard ascent of Calvario and its serpentine ramps marked by the number Cai 123.
When you reach Sboccata dei Bagnadori, go around Mount la Nuda, take the easy path 323 to the left that leads to Bocca d'Ivo and comes out on the paved road that leads to Madonna dell'Acero. You then take the road to the left and, having passed Madonna dell'Acero, continue uphill to Cavone, after which you take path Cai 329, still uphill, which leads to the malghe (shepherd's huts) and climbs up to the Duca degli Abruzzi refuge overlooking Lake Scaffaiolo.
You then retrace the ridge trail already made on the way up to Croce Arcana Pass. From the cross, you face the descent of Cai 415, which cuts the driveway made on the way out, and returns to Capanna Tassoni. This of the cuts is a beautiful descent all in the woods with rocks and roots and some technical points, however never obvious and very fun.
