Santa Trada (Pilone)
Road bike route, starting from Nicotera and heading to Santa Trada, above Scilla.
The route runs along the Gioia Tauro pianda and the Costa Viola. It starts from Nicotera heading south. You pass the flat towns of San Ferdinando and Gioia Tauro, and climb toward Sant'Elia, passing through the town of Palmi, the beginning of the Costa Viola. The climb, which starts in Gioia Tauro and ends on Mount Sant'Elia, is 11 km long with an average gradient of 4.5 percent. Just before the end of the climb, you can make a stop at the lookout point by turning right (option not included in the ride).
Once in Barritteri, the descent to Bagnara Calabra begins, about 12 km long. Once the descent is over, there will be about 10 km of ups and downs, broken by a break in Scilla, and followed by the climb to the Santa Trada pylon. Having taken a photo break, we start again by retracing the route already taken, with a small detour to Rosarno.
The route runs all the way to Gioia Taura on provincial roads, and from Gioia Tauro onward on the SS18, so care must be taken. Despite riding on the SS18, the ride will be very scenic, especially from Barritteri onward. You will be pedaling lapping the coast.
