Via Vandelli
Classic and very challenging ride in the Apuan Alps. Some exposed sections. Not recommended if you are not sure about the weather. To underline the fact that like all the tours in the Apuan Alps are technical routes, often on rock (and in this case also paved) and should therefore be done considering one's limits for both ascents and descents.
From Canevara (near Massa) one must climb to the Vestito Pass and then continue downhill to Arni on asphalt for about 18 km. The climb despite being on asphalt is very beautiful and with little traffic. Recommended tunnel lights
Once in Arni it is worthwhile to stock up on water at a fountain in front of the church (we will not find any more until the Conti refuge). From here steep marmifera to the Sella Pass. It is about 4 km challenging both in terms of gradient and bottom. Pedalability about 40%. From the pass you go down the beautiful mule track descent into the Arnetola valley. Then follows the piece + hard, the Vandelli uphill to the Tambura pass. In these 3.8 km the rideability is at maximum 30%. In detail from km 25.7 (at elevation 1120) you climb on a feasible dirt road until km 26.9 (at elevation 1200). From here begins the paved road to Passo dell Tambura (at elevation 1621m) It is 2.5 km and 420 m of elevation gain to push. We did the stretch on foot in 1 h 20' with proper stops. Beautiful, however, arriving at the Pass with views of the sea, Gulf of La Spezia, Lake Vagli and the view of the Apuan Alps that more than repays the effort made on the ascent.
From here descent. The first part up to the Vandelli window with sections to be done on foot. The section is about 1 km and the first 300 meters are the most difficult. From finestra Vandelli starts a detour wanting for a refreshment at Rifugio Conti 300 m long with some steps. Then follows the descent on paved road (here a well-cushioned bike is preferable) always following the spectacular via Vandelli to Resceto, very, very nice to do by mtb. From Resceto to Canevara continue on asphalt for about 7 km.
